What’s your priority?

Many years ago when I moved into training from my corporate job, I was lucky enough to find a mentor to guide me.

I was frustrated because I was finding it difficult to get business and it was taking very long for contracts to come through.

I was putting in the work I felt and not getting any rewards.My mentor made me walk through a typical day and week. And the realisation was that because I was also involved with my housework, travelling to meet my parents every 2 months, reading for reasearch, designing programs, I was putting in very few hours for business development.

It turns out I had about 2-3 hours in a week to do all the business development I could.

This message in the pic is pretty much a summary of his thoughts. He said that if I only had 2-3 hours a week and I wanted to continue doing all that I was doing currently ( housework etc) then I was doing ok! He offered me a perspective – Because at 3 hours a week, I was getting so many days of work!

If I wanted to achieve more then I would have to give up something. it was up to me to decide. if I didn’t want to do anything about it, then I should give myself permission to be happy with my decision. It was totally up to me to decide what was working for me and if I wanted to give up something. I was totally taken aback because I thought he would give me a magic formula.

It took me a while to realise that I didn’t want to give up on the other areas of my life (that was why I quit my job in the first place!) and I was ok.

I was ok with achieving a little less so I could travel to see my parents. I was ok to do less work in the month so I could spend time with my husband.

Once I was aware, it helped my decisions on what work I did going forward. Did I want to spend time on design? Did I want to spend time on networking? Did I not want to work on the project because it was paying me very little and I could use the same energy for business development?

This is a story I share very often with women I coach. It’s ok to not achieve something in an area of your life if it is going to cost you in some other area of your life.

Give yourself permission. It depends on YOU how much you value that something and the energy you will spend on it.
